SoMAC: Summer of Music, Arts & Culture

As part of the drive to put cultural regeneration at the heart of the city, Marketing Gloucester announce that in 2016 there will be a two month festival running through July and August 2016 entitled the Summer of Music, Art & Culture.

Jason Smith, chief executive of Marketing Gloucester stated “2016 will be an exceptional year for cultural events in the city of Gloucester including; an extended two week blues festival, the return of the world’s oldest music festival – The Three Choirs Music festival, and a host of other events”. Following on the success of the 2014 Paint Jam organised by Marketing Gloucester, they have  announced that a new competition and exhibition of art will take place over the 30th and 31st of July 2016 called ‘Art in the City’ with over 400 artists creating pieces over the weekend for a top prize of £5000 followed by a one month exhibition of the artwork throughout the city. Lise Noakes, Cabinet member for culture and leisure, commented “Gloucester is rapidly becoming a go to place for those wanting to enjoy cultural events; SoMAC will be a great festival to help promote these.”

During the Rugby World Cup celebrations, Marketing Gloucester, with the support of the Gloucester City Council and the Arts Council of England, organised a whole range of cultural events including: Lindy Hop Jazz Jive Swing, Red Hot Chili Pipers concert, Kapa Haka Tale performance, Joji Hirota & the Taiko Drummers, The Rugby Flashmob, Show and Prove Dance Battle Platform, Ensemble Rustavi Georgian choir, Haka Day Out, and the Argentinean Tango.  These were all a tremendous success. Paul James, Leader of the Council said “it is evident from the response to the music, art and performances delivered during the Rugby World Cup the there is a real appetite both from the people of Gloucester and further afield.”
